LingOlyDB: A Linguistics Olympiad Problem Archive
In high school, I competed in NACLO (the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad), a linguistics olympiad where competitors solve puzzles using data on languages they've never seen before. It's a test of logic and pattern recognition more than prior knowledge of languages, and obscure languages are deliberately used in the olympiad to make sure of this. I first participated in 2024, and qualified for Team USA after clearing two rounds of NACLO that year. I then represented the USA at IOL (International Linguistics Olympiad - yes, the letters in the abbreviation are deliberately mismatched) where I won a gold medal. Since then, I've stayed involved with the NACLO team and have since made a couple problems myself.
The database currently contains over 1,300 problems. It only stores metadata for searchability and links out to each problem's original source, so it doesn't host any problem or solution text itself.
